It is the dilation of the blood vessels supplying blood to the corpus cavernosa and corpus spongiosa, which leads to increased blood flow into them and a subsequent erection.

As long as the levels of cGMP are high, there will be continuous vasodilation, and a good hard erection. cGMP is broken down by the enzyme Phosphodiasterase-5(PDE-5). It is this enzyme which is crucial to making or breaking an erection.
